A lot of people are finding discomfort in this time of panic during the Coronavirus outbreak. The majority of establishments are closed, people can’t even go work out at the gym down the street that they’ve been going to for years. There may be some tension in doing what’s right to prevent the spreading of germs and helping those around you.

The Centers for Disease Control has made the recommendation that we all take steps to clean and sanitize high-touch surfaces in our homes.

Wash Your Hands

The most important thing you can do to decrease your chances of contracting Covid-19 (or pass it on to someone else) is to wash your hands after doing anything no matter what.

Hand sanitizer is also something good to keep on you at all times. The accessibility of hand sanitizer is what makes it so attractive. The World Health Organization has detailed instructions on how to properly perform the 20-second hand wash in the attached link.

Stay home as much as possible, even if you’re not sick. By continuing to go out and socialize with people, you aren’t only putting yourself at risk- but you’re putting those around you at risk. It can take up to a couple of weeks to show symptoms; so you could feel perfectly fine and still be a carrier of the virus. That’s why it’s best to have as little human interaction as possible during this time.

Important Rules to Stay Safe:

  • Try to stay at home unless you are running to the pharmacy or grocery store.
  • Use 6 feet of distance between others as the general rule of thumb
  • WASH YOUR HANDS!!!!!
  • Wear a protective mask out if you’re feeling under the weather

To Keep Your Home Virus-Free

Cleaning and Disinfecting. First things first, cleaning and disinfecting are two completely different things. The CDC recommends we clean and disinfects, even if nobody in your home is sick.

  • Cleaning is about REMOVING germs
  • Disinfecting is about KILLING germs
  • During this time- both should be done daily

High-Touch Surfaces to Clean and Disinfect Daily:

First Clean, Then Disinfect:

  1. Clean surfaces thoroughly
  2. Use disinfecting wipes or disinfecting spray on clean surfaces

If You Cannot Find Store-Bought Disinfectants.

Store shelves are very picked over and bare right now. If you need it, the CDC also has a recommended recipe for a homemade cleaning solution using household bleach.

How to Disinfect Your Phone or Tablet

Make sure to disinfect your phones and tablets with an alcohol solution that contains at least 70% alcohol. Pay close attention to all areas of the phone, and make sure you don’t miss any parts.

If you use a laptop or desktop computer, make sure to wipe down the keyboard, mouse areas, and all displays.

For any other electronic device, if the exterior is primarily plastic or rubber, it’s okay to disinfect with disinfecting wipes as well.

Stay Home, Stay Safe

There’s a lot going in the world right now- most people find it unsettling. It is important to find comfort in things you can right now- including your family, reading a book, watching a movie, or playing your favorite board game. Make sure to stay informed and up-to-date on all information during this time. Remember- this will pass.
